Polar Atmosphere Phenomena
: Focusing on the Polar Vortex
Introduction
The Polar Vortex, a large-scale circulation that confines cold air over the polar regions.
The Polar Vortex plays a fundamental role in regulating Earth's climate system.
In recent decades, its weakening - closely associated with rapid Arctic warming - has been linked to extreme winter weather events such as cold waves and heavy snowfall across the mid-latitudes.
This project aims to investigate the mechanisms behind these phenomena, examine their relationship with ozone depletion, and assess the potential societal and environmental impacts under ongoing climate change.
