Polar Atmosphere Phenomena
: Focusing on the Polar Vortex

SSW
Since SSW is an atmospheric phenomenon that occurs naturally, it is difficult to prevent it directly.
However, it suggests three ways to relieve the impact or respond to the phenomenon.

1. Strengthen forecast and early warning systems
• In the event of SSW, extreme weather such as cold waves,
heavy snow, and strong winds appears in the mid-latitude of the northern hemisphere. If these SSW signs are observed, early warning is issued globally, thereby minimizing human damage and preventing social confusion.

2. Stabilize energy and power supply
• In the event of a cold wave due to extreme climate change, the demand for heating increases rapidly, and in severe cases, there is a possibility that the heating system may fail.
• Social damage is reduced by securing power that can be used in an emergency or devising a method that can be connected to each home in advance.

3. Health and welfare response
• Abnormal climate caused by SSW can damage residential areas or cause health diseases in vulnerable groups such as the elderly and the weak.
• Emergency shelters should be operated or emergency medical systems should be prepared to enable rapid protection and treatment.
